Public Policy Paper

Objective:

            The objective of this paper is to give you an in-depth understanding of one of the major public policy issues facing our community today. You will be given the opportunity to select an issue from either the ones that are covered in class or one of your own choosing, based upon the following six categories; Health Issues, International Disputes, Environment, Human Rights, Ethnic and Cultural Conflict, and Globalization. You will then research this issue to discover its historical roots, its present consequences, and what is being done to solve the problem. This project will require a great deal of research and focus and must meet the following criteria:

 

Content Checklist:

  • Describe and analyze the issue in detail; including, its historical background, who it affects, and the special interest groups involved.
  • Explain the views of the politician's political party on this issue, as well as the views of the opposite party.
  • Provide evidence of national and/or state public and local opinion on this issue using polling data.
  • Provide the pros and cons to at least two options available to address this issue that includes who would support and oppose each option, relevant public opinion data, views of the politician’s political party, and potential outcomes.

 

Structure Checklist:

  • It must be at least 10 full typed pages in length, double spaced, excluding works cited, graphics, charts, etc.
  • Paper formatting must follow proper MLA formatting as described by Owl Perdue.
  • It must contain a works cited with a minimum of three sources. 
  • Statistics, quotes, original ideas, and references must be cited using MLA inline citations.
  • The font must be Times New Roman size 12.

 

NOTE: Final Drafts will not be scored if the structure requirements are not met.

NOTE: Space taken up by charts or graphics will not count toward the length requirement.
